MES PTA Scholastic Online Book Fair Now Through December 25, 2020!
Join us in celebrating a love of reading and supporting literacy for all Dolphins by shopping at the PTA's annual winter bookfair! Scholastic will give back 25% in rewards to the MES PTA when you shop through December 25th! The Scholastic Dollars the PTA earns helps to support literacy for all Dolphins. Previously, these Scholastic Dollars were used to purchase birthday books, and this fall the Scholastic Dollars enabled the PTA to purchase large orders of books that were sent home as instructional texts. Happy reading!

MES Families Helping Families - Winter Warmth Coat and Gift Drive
MES Families Helping Families is kicking off our holiday support efforts and we need all hands on deck as the needs are vast and wide this season. We are doing things a bit differently this year as COVID is impacting our ability to shop, gather and wrap as we have in past years. We are staying nimble and figuring out ways we can continue to support our MES families and spread joy during the holiday season.
First, we will be gathering small gifts on a case by case basis however the majority of our gift giving will be given in the form of gift cards so families can purchase their own gifts as they see fit. Gift cards from Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Food Lion or other grocery stores can be mailed directly to the school (McDougle Elementary 890 Old Fayetteville Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27516) attention of Laura Olley OR you can donate money directly to Catherine Gravatt via Venmo (@Catherine-Gravatt). If you donate via Venmo, please put in notes FOR MES HOLIDAY GIVING.
We realize everyone is under financial strain now more than ever so whatever you can contribute is greatly appreciated. There are several ways you can contribute.
1) Contribute a gift card or monetary contribution in any amount of your choosing (mail in or Venmo @Catherine-Gravatt
2) Sponsor one child in the amount of $50.00
3) Sponsor a family of four for $150.00
4) Sponsor a family of five for $200.00
5) Contact Laura Olley (email@example.com) to ask for a specific gift item to purchase and deliver to the school
Secondly, we are also hosting a “winter warmth” drive. Please bring new or gently used, clean coats, new hats, new gloves to McDougle Elementary School or drop off at Catherine Gravatt’s home at 304 Autumn Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. We need a variety of sizes for both boys and girls.
All contributions (coats, hats, gloves, gift cards, monetary donations) should be completed no later than Thursday, December 10th end of day. If you need to make a separate arrangement or have questions please contact Catherine Gravatt at firstname.lastname@example.org (txt 917-648-4566) or Laura Olley at email@example.com.
Thank you for all you do and for all your support. Let’s make this a wonderful holiday for our MES Family!
In-Person Learning and Learning Commitment Form
(District Message 11/30/2020)
As we prepare to reopen campuses, our team has been working to gather the latest information and strategies that will keep all of our students and staff as safe and healthy as possible. That information has been compiled into a document we call Welcome Back. You can access it here.
We have also created a short four-minute video that provides a sneak peek at how school will look once we return. Please take a few minutes to give it a look.
Please submit a choice by the deadline of midnight on Sunday, December 6, 2020.
The choices are spelled out in some detail inside the commitment form, which you should have received for each student by email.
Your responses will be used to plan staffing and other logistics to serve students. If more than one adult in the family receives emails about this student, please discuss your preference and submit one response per student.
Looking for some family fun? Great news! McDougle Elementary School hosted Family Fitness Night on Thursday, December 3 from 6:30-7:45 PM. Businesses in our community presented their brand of fitness for all families to enjoy. These businesses were United Tae Kwon Do, Carrboro Yoga Company, Fit on Main, High Fit with Ms. Watson, Crossfit Homeward, and Aerotrix Jump Rope Team. For more information about these businesses, please visit the Virtual Family Fitness Night page. Big thanks to Mr. Drexler for coordinating this great event for the whole family, and for all the businesses for participating!

Donation and Volunteer Opportunity From the CHCCS PTA Council
As Thanksgiving approaches, our PTA would like to ask our generous community to support CHCCS families in need. Our school social workers have received more requests for assistance than ever before. During Thanksgiving break, which will be a week-long this year, the daily breakfasts, lunches and snacks will be packaged for distribution on Monday, November 23rd. In addition, to make sure that the families in our community have plenty of nourishing food during the holiday week, we are partnering with the child nutrition team to provide an additional box of fresh produce.
Normally, our PTAs ask families to donate non-perishable items to holiday food drives. During remote learning, this type of food drive won't be possible. Instead, we're asking you to make a tax-deductible donation to a Public School Foundation Fund that will help our Child Nutrition Department purchase healthy food for our families in need. $12.50 will provide a family with a box filled with fresh apples, oranges, pears, tomatoes, kale, carrots, potatoes, and onions. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to provide 800 meal boxes. Please click here to make a donation: Food for Students Thanksgiving Donations. In the comments section of the donation form please add: "Thanksgiving Food". Donations will be accepted through November 8.
On Monday, November 23, we are gearing up for our biggest food distribution yet...as there is a need to get 18,600 meals out to children and families in a span of two hours. We will be preparing and packing from November 18-22. Please sign up to help out here. Times and locations are included in the link. As much as we would love for our volunteers to bring others with them, we are still limiting the people who go to the sites to just those adults who sign up. If you are able to help, we would love to have you. Thank you for being a part of this process to make sure that our families have a Happy Thanksgiving.

District Message (10/2020)
Greetings CHCCS Families. I am working on a recommendation to bring to our Board of Education on October 15 regarding the plan for eventually reopening our schools. Your input is crucial to the process. To that end, I have created a very short poll…it will take less than 60 seconds to complete. It is important to note this is not a vote, but this data will be very valuable in helping us make the best recommendation possible.
Please click here to access the survey, and I will need your responses by Sunday night (10/11/2020).
Thank you in advance for assisting in this process, and thank you for your continued support.
Dr. Jim Causby
Call for Treasurer (September 2020)
Hello McDougle Families,
The PTA has an important role in helping provide support for our children, families, and staff. To do so we need to have a strong board and an even stronger member group.
Our amazing Treasurer must step down and we are looking for someone to fill this role. Without a Treasurer we cannot issue funds. If you are interested in this Board position please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If the Treasurer role is not right for you, there are other Board positions and membership is always open!
We look forward to being able to continue to serve you and our McDougle family.
Update: The position of treasurer has been filled as of October 9, 2020.
