Staff Appreciation Week 2021

Hello McDougle Elementary Families!

Teacher Appreciation (May 3-7) is just two weeks away! During a year without precedent, our teachers and staff have worked tirelessly to support every student, while also taking care of their own families. Please join us in showing how much you care for the MES community. You can help us do that in two ways:

1. Make a financial contribution to our Teacher Appreciation Fund:

All funds gathered will be used for a teacher and staff breakfast and lunch and individual gift bags containing a few treats. Contributions can be made through the MES PTA PayPal Account.

2. Leave a message of support and appreciation on our virtual Kudoboard! Kudoboard for MES Teachers and Staff | Kudoboard

Kudoboard for MES Teachers and Staff | Kudoboard

MES Supplemental Supply Drive

The MES PTA is assisting in gathering supplies for in-person and remote learning. The district has already provided MES with cleaning supplies and face masks, but the PTA wants to help provide extra materials for each classroom.

Currently, there are two supply lists:

  1. A school wide Amazon Smile wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/GMF1Q45PQWJM?ref_=wl_share.

  2. Ms. Z has created an art supply wishlist for MES students as well: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2JWM4UNGT39EB?ref_=wl_share

While these lists are convenient, we have noticed that some of these supplies may be far less expensive at local stores. It is not necessary to use the Amazon list to contribute - all donations are welcome, and may be dropped off at MES. We will be updating the Amazon Smile list regularly, as supply needs evolve and change.

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity! And many thanks to those who have already contributed

Community Arts Opportunity - Chatham Arts Council

Come enjoy a community arts event and see Ms. Z on May 2nd at ClydeFEST in the Wild! She will be performing at 2 pm! Please note that while the events are free, some stations require a reservation https://www.chathamartscouncil.org/clydefest-in-the-wild-2021/

Dismissal Dashboard Cards - Distribution 3/22/21

As MES prepares to open for in person learning on Monday, we want to be sure that we keep student safety at the forefront. This year, we will use dashboard cards to match students and parents during afternoon dismissal for carpool. In order to pick up your child, you will need to have this card displayed in your dashboard. We have new staff and new families and we want to ensure that every child is sent home with the correct adult. Please be patient with us as we work through this process.

On Monday March 22, 2021, from 9am-11am and then again from 4pm-6pm, we will have carpool card distribution. Parents will need to show identification so that we can verify relationship using the information in our system. Please come by to get your child's carpool card. We will give each family two cards.

THANK YOU MES TEACHERS AND STAFF!

This morning we take a minute to welcome back our teachers and staff. We cannot express enough gratitude for their dedication, grace, and flexibility over the past 12 months! We appreciate you!

Mask Pick Up and Book Drop Off March 16, 2021

MES has 5 cloth masks for each McDougle student that will be distributed next Tuesday, March 16th from 9am-11am and then again from 4pm - 6pm. Please drive through kiss and go to pick up your mask.

During this time, we are also asking parents to drop off any books that your child's teacher has asked to be returned. We need to use these books for other students and need them to be returned to the school. We will have bins outside labeled "K-2" and "3-5" for books to be returned to.

If for some reason you cannot make it to this event, you may come by the school at any day next week to pick up your child's mask and drop off books.

MES Families Helping Families - Winter Warmth Coat and Gift Drive

MES Families Helping Families is kicking off our holiday support efforts and we need all hands on deck as the needs are vast and wide this season. We are doing things a bit differently this year as COVID is impacting our ability to shop, gather and wrap as we have in past years. We are staying nimble and figuring out ways we can continue to support our MES families and spread joy during the holiday season.

First, we will be gathering small gifts on a case by case basis however the majority of our gift giving will be given in the form of gift cards so families can purchase their own gifts as they see fit. Gift cards from Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Food Lion or other grocery stores can be mailed directly to the school (McDougle Elementary 890 Old Fayetteville Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27516) attention of Laura Olley OR you can donate money directly to Catherine Gravatt via Venmo (@Catherine-Gravatt). If you donate via Venmo, please put in notes FOR MES HOLIDAY GIVING.

We realize everyone is under financial strain now more than ever so whatever you can contribute is greatly appreciated. There are several ways you can contribute.

1) Contribute a gift card or monetary contribution in any amount of your choosing (mail in or Venmo @Catherine-Gravatt

2) Sponsor one child in the amount of $50.00

3) Sponsor a family of four for $150.00

4) Sponsor a family of five for $200.00

5) Contact Laura Olley (lolley@chccs.k12.nc.us) to ask for a specific gift item to purchase and deliver to the school

Secondly, we are also hosting a “winter warmth” drive. Please bring new or gently used, clean coats, new hats, new gloves to McDougle Elementary School or drop off at Catherine Gravatt’s home at 304 Autumn Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. We need a variety of sizes for both boys and girls.

All contributions (coats, hats, gloves, gift cards, monetary donations) should be completed no later than Thursday, December 10th end of day. If you need to make a separate arrangement or have questions please contact Catherine Gravatt at gravattfive@gmail.com (txt 917-648-4566) or Laura Olley at lolley@chccs.k12.nc.us.

Thank you for all you do and for all your support. Let’s make this a wonderful holiday for our MES Family!

Welcome Back Video - Spanish

Please submit a choice by the deadline of midnight on Sunday, December 6, 2020.

The choices are spelled out in some detail inside the commitment form, which you should have received for each student by email.

Donation and Volunteer Opportunity From the CHCCS PTA Council

As Thanksgiving approaches, our PTA would like to ask our generous community to support CHCCS families in need. Our school social workers have received more requests for assistance than ever before. During Thanksgiving break, which will be a week-long this year, the daily breakfasts, lunches and snacks will be packaged for distribution on Monday, November 23rd. In addition, to make sure that the families in our community have plenty of nourishing food during the holiday week, we are partnering with the child nutrition team to provide an additional box of fresh produce.

Normally, our PTAs ask families to donate non-perishable items to holiday food drives. During remote learning, this type of food drive won't be possible. Instead, we're asking you to make a tax-deductible donation to a Public School Foundation Fund that will help our Child Nutrition Department purchase healthy food for our families in need. $12.50 will provide a family with a box filled with fresh apples, oranges, pears, tomatoes, kale, carrots, potatoes, and onions. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to provide 800 meal boxes. Please click here to make a donation: Food for Students Thanksgiving Donations. In the comments section of the donation form please add: "Thanksgiving Food". Donations will be accepted through November 8.

On Monday, November 23, we are gearing up for our biggest food distribution yet...as there is a need to get 18,600 meals out to children and families in a span of two hours. We will be preparing and packing from November 18-22. Please sign up to help out here. Times and locations are included in the link. As much as we would love for our volunteers to bring others with them, we are still limiting the people who go to the sites to just those adults who sign up. If you are able to help, we would love to have you. Thank you for being a part of this process to make sure that our families have a Happy Thanksgiving.

District Message (10/2020)

Greetings CHCCS Families. I am working on a recommendation to bring to our Board of Education on October 15 regarding the plan for eventually reopening our schools. Your input is crucial to the process. To that end, I have created a very short poll…it will take less than 60 seconds to complete. It is important to note this is not a vote, but this data will be very valuable in helping us make the best recommendation possible.

Please click here to access the survey, and I will need your responses by Sunday night (10/11/2020).

Thank you in advance for assisting in this process, and thank you for your continued support.

Dr. Jim Causby

Interim Superintendent

Call for Treasurer (September 2020)

Hello McDougle Families,

The PTA has an important role in helping provide support for our children, families, and staff. To do so we need to have a strong board and an even stronger member group.

Our amazing Treasurer must step down and we are looking for someone to fill this role. Without a Treasurer we cannot issue funds. If you are interested in this Board position please reach out to me at president@mesptanc.org.

If the Treasurer role is not right for you, there are other Board positions and membership is always open!

We look forward to being able to continue to serve you and our McDougle family.

Update: The position of treasurer has been filled as of October 9, 2020.
