Volunteer Opportunity - Weekly Dance Party Volunteer

If you are interested in helping lead our school's dance party on Wednesdays from 12pm-12:20pm, please let Ms. Howard know. We want to keep this going for the students while we are schooling remotely, but we have staffing needs. Please email ahoward@chccs.k12.nc.us if you can help. Thanks in advance.

District Level Volunteer Opportunity - Get Involved with SNAC

The Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC) is organized with four current workgroups. The members of these workgroups study areas of concern brought forward by its members and the special needs community. We then collaborate with district staff and advocate on these issues to the District, Superintendent, and Board of Education. We invite you to read below to learn more about each workgroup. Please fill out the form attached if you would like to join a workgroup listserv or the general SNAC email listserv, which sends communications about monthly meetings, resources, and important updates. Even if you are unable to attend workgroup meetings, the leaders do send out email communications.

Our four current workgroups include:

General Education Workgroup - working on behalf of students with IEPs or 504s who are placed in general education/grade level classrooms. Areas of study include:

  • Co-teaching

  • Support for social skills and executive functioning in high school

  • Support for students when group work is required in high school

  • Improved instruction for students with dyslexia

  • Support for families during remote learning

Adapted Curriculum Workgroup - working on behalf of students who are in system level adapted curriculum classes on the extended content standards. Areas of study include:

  • Staff retention and support

  • Literacy Supports

  • Augmentative Communication Technology

  • Professional Development

  • Progress and safety of AC Students

  • Loss of vocational rehabilitation during the pandemic

Secondary Transition Workgroup - working to improve post-secondary transition opportunities for high school students with IEPs. Areas of study include:

  • Family access to transition resources and processes during remote learning.

  • Implementation of student transition plans

  • Community Engagement with Lincoln Center, especially in how to create job training opportunities during and after the pandemic

  • Advocacy for OCS students missing school and community based work training hours during remote learning.

Twice Exceptional (2E) Workgroup - working on behalf of students who have an IEP or 504 and are identified as gifted. Areas of study include:

  • Advocacy for families during remote learning

  • Supporting and training for teachers and staff

  • Communication with Powerschool and coordinating multiple services such as gifted, EC, 504, guidance, and Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Families Helping Families - Clothing Closet

The Clothes Closet is currently seeking volunteers in the following positions: (1) to assist with the sorting, folding, and distribution of clothing, and (2) a lead volunteer who is interested in taking over as Director of the Clothes Closet.

Most immediately, we have donations coming in and those would need to be laundered and sorted into the bins, which are beautifully organized and labeled. Additionally, help with putting together "kits" for families that have requested items will be needed.

Training will be provided. Not sure if you want to commit? Start out as a volunteer and see if this position is the right fit for you. Please email Laura Olley, at lolley@chccs.k12.nc.us for more information.

Do you or anyone in your family like to sew and are interested in helping the McDougle community? The Clothes Closet needs volunteers to make cloth laundry bags for the Clothing Kits given away free to families in need. Volunteers would provide the fabric and sewing machine. Pattern and instructions would be provided. Please email the parent coordinator, Kate Sickora, at sickorakate@gmail.com for more information.

McDougle Garden Volunteer Opportunity

The McDougle Garden has become very out of control and we are in desperate need of some help getting it maintainable again. We are planning to cover crop all of the beds for the fall, to keep them low maintenance and in good condition. We need to get them ready for when students come back and teachers need a safe, open, outdoor classroom space, however, in order to get there, we need to start by pulling all of the weeds that have taken over.

Please contact either Ms. Olley at lolley@chccs.k12.nc.us or Jess Pusch, School Garden Coordinator, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, at jpusch19@gmail.com for additional information about the McDougle Garden.
